Malawi Coffee
Smallholder Malawi Coffee wholesale production is confined
to the five growing areas of the Northern Region. These are
Misuku hills in Chitipa district, Phoka hills and Viphya North
in Rumphi districts, Nkhata Bay highlands in Nkhata Bay district
and South East Mzimba in Mzimba District. Very little Malawi
Coffee is produced in Central Region from Dedza and Nchisi
though these areas are very potential for this crop.
Coffee was introduced in the North of Malawi by Missionaries
in the 30's. The Missionaries produced seedlings for sell to
farmers around them and in turn farmers sold processed Coffee
parchment to the Missionaries.
Coffee marketing in Malawi is completely liberalized. Farmers
are free to sell Malawi Coffee in wholesale anywhere provided
they make Profit. The Trusts objective in to pay farmers a fair
price so that this contribute to poverty Alleviation which is
the main Government Agenda. The Trust tries to pay farmers anything
between 60-80% of the export price realised. To achieve the
above objective, Malawi Coffee produced by farmers must be of
the highest quality so that it is properly marketed.
